Title: Spirulina: an example of cyanobacteria as nutraceuticals
Abstract: Nutraceuticals are products isolated or purified from food that is generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with food. Cyanobacteria have been used as foods from ancient times. For example, Spirulina has been reported to be an ordinal food around Lake Chad in central Africa and Lake Texcoco in Mexico. Arthrospira platensis has become an important industrial organic material, used as a health supplement, a source of β-carotene, and a natural coloring agent. Spirulina is expected to become a "food of the future" because of its ability to synthesize high-quality concentrated nutrients more efficiently than any other alga. Although Spirulina has been shown to be non-toxic, quality control in the growth of Spirulina and its processing are indispensable to avoid contamination by other cyanobacteria and guarantee the safety of Spirulina products. Knowledge of the genome sequence of Spirulina will open new avenues for the production of useful nutraceuticals.
