Many of the reactions through which redox processes are accomplished are biological in nature. This chapter begins with a discussion of redox reactions, and assigning of oxidation states before describing the writing and adding of half reactions, and equilibrium constants for redox half reactions. Next, the Nernst equation and the parameter pE are explained. The section on electron availability in environmental systems includes pE–pH (EH–pH) predominance diagrams and information on the effect of pE on redox couple speciation. Finally, the concept of speciation using electron availability is explained. The chapter ends with a set of exercises for the reader.Read More
