Title: Significant Learning Communities – A Humanistic Approach to Knowledge and Human Resource Development in the Age of the Internet
Abstract: This paper aims to bring together the potentials inherent in humanistic, person-centered encounter groups with collaborative learning supported by interactive web spaces. The resulting socio-technical systems are referred to as Significant Learning Communities. They are based on the notion of significant learning, subsuming processes of personal and knowledge development based on constructive relationships between individuals and their environment. The paper characterizes Significant Learning Communities, compares them with similar relationship systems, reflects on the role of web-based tools, and identifies both the challenges and benefits of the new socio-technical construct.
