Title: The Personal is Historical: Oral History and Undergraduate Research Papers
Abstract: This essay shares how oral history enables students to personally identify with and find enhanced meaning in historical research. Students in two gender and ethnic studies history classes conduct interviews of family and community members, and contextualize the interviews in research papers and presentations. Teaching interview techniques through collaborative sessions where interview questions are generated as a class and then individualized for specific interviews can deepen students’ ownership of their project and lead to meaningful discussions about communication skills. Faculty across the disciplines may find the interview project useful in building personal connections between students, their courses, and their communities.
