Abstract: In this paper we introduce a taxonomy of covert channels that is based on the context in which the covert channel occurs. This differs from the usual taxonomies, which are based upon the mechanisms employed by the covert channel. Our goal is to use a context-based taxonomy to aid in the understanding of the tradeoffs that are involved in building a secure system.
