Abstract: A new energy policy proposal is expected to emphasize the use of indigenous coal and other energy sources to replace Belgium's heavy reliance on natural gas and oil imports. Efforts to ensure gas supplies by diversifying supply sources were spurred by the dwindling gas fields in Holland and the demands of the Belgian chemical industry. An increase in nuclear energy from the present 25% of electricity generated to an anticipated 50% by 1984 is thought by some to represent too great a dependence on nuclear energy if demand growth continues to fall below expected levels. Expanded use of coal, the major energy source for the steel industry, will require new mining methods and research on gasification.
