Title: At a Crossroads: First Results for the 18 to 20-Year-old Cohort of the Youth in Transition Survey.
Abstract: This report presents information on the issue of dropping out of high school in Canada and describes the post-high school education and work experiences of 18-20 year olds. The report draws on the new Canadian longitudinal survey, the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS), launched in 2000. The survey collects information on major transitions in the lives of young people, particularly between education, training and work. Follow-up surveys of the original participants are planned every two years for a period of several years. Chapter one outlines the context of the survey, its objectives, content and design, and the objectives and organisation of this report. Chapter two presents estimates of Canada’s high school dropout rate and the dropout rates for all provinces. Also included is a comparison between the YITS dropout rates with those from the School Leavers Survey, which focused on high school dropouts in 1991. Chapter three provides more detailed comparisons of the characteristics of high school dropouts and graduates. Data is presented on family and parental background, school achievement and attitude towards school, involvement with part-time work during high school, student behaviour, peer influences, and educational aspirations. Chapter four examines the flows between high school and postsecondary education and labour market blocks. Participation in all forms of postsecondary education is outlined as well as findings on the characteristics of youth that have dropped out of postsecondary studies before completing their programs of study. The experiences of youth that enter the labour market directly from high school are outlined. To assess their preparedness, self-assessments of skills are compared for youth that go on to postsecondary education and for those that enter the labour market directly. Results are also provided on the extent of high school participation in career planning courses and job-skills courses such as work experience programs, apprenticeships, and trade and vocational programs.
