Abstract: A SYSTEM OF MASS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FOR THE MEDIUM-SIZED CITY MUST LIE BETWEEN THE EXTREMES OF RAIL RAPID AND CONVENTIONAL BUS COMMUTATION. THE PORT AUTHORITY OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY HAS EMBARKED UPON AN INNOVATIVE PROJECT ENCOMPASSING 38 MILES OF PUBLIC LINES. THE TRANSIT EXPRESSWAY WILL FEATURE RUBBER-WHEELED SKY RUNNING ON AN ELEVATED GUIDEWAY, WITH FULL COMPUTER CONTROL. THE PATHWAY CORRIDORS PROVIDE CONVENTIONAL BUSES WITH EXCLUSIVE ROADWAYS, ALLOWING FOR A HIGHER PASSENGER CAPACITY THAN ORDINARY BUS ROUTING. FINALLY, THE CONVENTIONAL STREETCARS WILL BE UPGRADED BY REBUILDING ROADBEDS AND REFURBISHING CARS. THE ENTIRE PROJECT IS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION IN 1975. /AUTHOR/
