Abstract: Recent research in Cognitive Science points out the necessity of explicitness in object constitution for research on aesthetic and non-aesthetic processes of text comprehension. Therefore the development of a cognitive model of literary discourse comprehension needs an intensive discussion of its basics in epistemological terms. In the first chapter the state of the art in empirical research on literary discourse processing is summarized. It is followed by a discussion of diverging aspects of linguistic and psychological levels of description in statements on language processing. Having offered a solution for the handling of texts within the cognitive paradigm, a first version of a cognitive model of literary discourse processing is presented. It is oriented towards the idea of mental models.
