Title: Weed Control Efficacy and Phytotoxicity of Penoxsulam SC (DE-638, DASH-1100) by Foliar Application
Abstract: A series of field trials were conducted in Korea from 2001 to 2002 to elucidate feasibility of Penoxsulam (DE-638, DASH-1100, 2-(2,2 -difluoroethoxy)-N-(5,8-dimethoxy[1,2,4] triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidin-2-yl)-6- trifluoromethyl)benzenesulfonamide) suspension concentrate (SC) by post-emergence foliar application in rice paddy. Penoxsulam 2.5 or 3% SC at 25 to 120 g ai ha-1 was sprayed directly to weeds at 27 to 35 days after transplanting (DAT), and there was no other herbicides used to control weeds prior to penoxulam application. Penoxsulam at 25 to 30 g ai ha-1 provided practical control of Echinochloa crus-galli (ECHCG), Bidens tripartita (BIDTR), Aeschynomene indica (AESIN), Cyperus difformis (CYPDI), Sagittaria trifolia (SAGTR), Eleocharis kuroguwai (ELOKU), Cyperus serotinus (CYPSE), Scirpus juncoides (SCPJU) and Monochoria vaginalis (MOOVA), which were about 10 to 30 cm tall at the time of application. The commercial standard product for comparison was cyhalofop -butyl+bentazon micro-emulsion (ME) formulation at 300+1,650 g ai . Control of Ludwigia prostrata (LUDPR) and Aneilema keisak (ANEKE) at 30 to 60 g ai ha-1 of penoxsulam was inconsistent. No significant difference in the efficacy of penoxsulam was noted with or without the adjuvant Triton(R) 60% SL at 0.05% in the spray solution. Some of the larger size weeds were not fully controlled and maintained green plant structure until 30 days after application (DAA) however, growth of those weeds was suppressed under the rice canopy without negatively influencing growth of rice plants. In rice, transient discolored spots were observed at 5 to 10 days after application (DAA) with at all rates of 25 to 120 g ai .
