Abstract: Universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) is European concept and is a part of the International Telecommunication Union's "IMT-2000" vision of a global family of third generation mobile communication. This chapter first discusses the evolution of the 3G network. UMTS consists of three parts: core network (CN), UMTS terrestrial access network (UTRAN), and user equipment (UE). The chapter then explains UTRAN architecture and different interfaces in the UMTS system. The UMTS has the following capabilities to support circuit and packet data at high bit rates: high mobility; full mobility; and limited mobility. As a radio access network, UTRAN should have four major functions: (1) overall system access control, (2) security and privacy; (3) handover; and (4) radio resource management and control. Controlled Vocabulary Terms 3G mobile communication; radio access networks
