Title: Elements for Improving the Teaching of the Later Phases of the Mechanical Engineering Design Process
Abstract: The study reported here focuses on teaching in embodiment design and detail design phases of the mechanical engineering design process, or design process for short. Teaching of the design process is often concentrated on the conceptual design phase, while the later phases are often reduced to a cluster of techniques and guidelines that help in solving specific problems but do not thoroughly guide the designer through the embodiment and detailing phases. From an earlier study it was observed that the differences between experts and students were partly due to the students' less effective design approach. Thus it was decided to implement a detailed design process model for the teaching of the later phases of the design process. This paper assesses whether the introduction of this process increased students' design skills (effectiveness and efficiency).
