Title: Responsibility of the African-American church as a source of support for adolescent fathers.
Abstract: This article traces the African-American churchs traditional role as a source of social support for the African-American community. It notes that the African-American church has served as a channel through which responses to issues in and outside the African-American community were made. For African-American men the relationship with the African- American church has been supportive and nurturing on the one hand and restrictive and irrelevant to their life style on the other. Unfortunately The African-American church has been conservative on the issue of adolescent pregnancy in general and on African-American adolescent fatherhood in particular. As fathers African-American men need the church to advocate for their social needs and to offer family and parenting services to support their roles as partners and as fathers. Moreover African-American men need to take positive and active roles as members of the church. (authors)
