Title: THE SPANISH-ENGLISH BILINGUAL AND THE VERB + PARTICLE COMBINATION
Abstract: Although they appear identical, with the exception of the lexical item filling the NP slot, structures 1 and 2 are radically different. Structure 1 is the verb + particle combination, with started up functioning as the verb and the car as direct object. Structure 2, however, is the verb + preposition with started as the verb and the mountain functioning as the object of the prepo sition up. On a semantic level, it is apparent that 2 has a localistic interpretation and that 1 does not. These superficially similar structures are problematic for both the Spanish speaker learn ing English and the English speaker learning Spanish. The Spanish teacher is confronted with the latter. Students, in writing, frequently translate literally and transform a verb + par ticle in English into a verb + preposition in Spanish. Structure 1 might become structure 3 in Spanish.
