Title: $COMPUTER DISPATCH AND SCHEDULING FOR PARATRANSIT: AN APPLICATION OF ADVANCED PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS
Abstract: Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) is one of five priority programs in the national IVHS Strategic Plan. APTS offers hope for alleviating three chronic problems in transit: knowing when and where to board the correct vehicle, having the correct fare and personal security. Another technology -- computer dispatch and scheduling -- deserves special attention. It is critical to public transportation service. By improving how vehicles are dispatched and scheduled (particularly on a shared-ride, real-time basis) three benefits will result. One is that operators will provide better service by responding more quickly, utilizing vehicles more efficiently, and automatically billing passengers or sponsors while maintaining complete records. Second, operators will expand their services to include dynamically dispatched, route-deviation transit. Third, taxi and paratransit passengers will soon be able to contact the reservation system directly much like passengers do for airline travel agents.
