Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to analyse why East German women are more willing to work than West German women. Based on the German microcensus and regional data on unemployment and childcare-facilities...The purpose of the paper is to analyse why East German women are more willing to work than West German women. Based on the German microcensus and regional data on unemployment and childcare-facilities, various logit models for the participation probability are estimated. The results show that a better provision of childcare-facilities for children aged up to 3 years has a positive effect on participation probability for West German women, while the effect for East German women is larger for children in the age of 3 to 6 years. In addition, West German women feel discouraged by bad regional labour-market conditions.Read More
