Title: INNOVATIVE TRANSIT PROJECTS IN THE UNITED STATES
Abstract: The article comments on the activities of the Federal Transit Administration, and on legislation that is encouraging technological innovation in the transit industry that will have far-reaching effects in the 21st century. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act and its funding of transit research is noted, as well as the Clean Air Act (1990), and the Americans with Disabilities Act. State and local legislation and regulations are also addressing congestion and air pollution. The intelligent vehicle highway systems initiated by the U.S. Department of Transportation are noted, in particular, its communication technologies and automatic vehicle location (AVL) technology. Not only will AVL expand markets and improve operations, it will significantly improve safety. Innovations in advanced transportation systems are also noted, including electric vehicles and alternative fuels. Innovations in bus/rail technology, mobility enhancements, and education are discussed.
