Title: Aspects Of Hatrene Religion: A Note On The Statues Of Kings And Nobles From Hatra
Abstract: This chapter examines life-size statues of human figures from Hatra, a pre-Islamic city located in the Jazirah in present-day Iraq. The Hatrene statues of kings and nobles nicely illustrate that there is more to religion than gods. In fact, it is only through people that we may hope to catch a glimpse of the supra-natural. The life-size statues of kings and nobles are a good starting point for such an interpretation. The chapter starts by introducing them and specifying why they are such a rich source of information. It address the question of what they reveal about the socio-religious organisation of the city. The chapter concludes by trying to shed some light upon this religious character. It do so by interpreting these statues in the context of textual and material remains from the Ancient Near East, which may be traced back to the third millennium BC.Keywords: Ancient Near East; Hatra; Hatrene; Iraq
