To appreciate the story of Seychelles' novel ecosystems, the chapter first summarizes some information on the biogeography and environmental history of the granitic Seychelles islands. It introduces three habitat types that are of particular importance for nature conservation in Seychelles, and discusses for each of them how the novel ecosystem concept can provide fresh perspectives for habitat management. The first example is nature conservation management on small islands that are free of non-native mammalian predators and therefore of particular value to nature conservation management. The second example is cinnamon-dominated secondary forest at mid-elevation on the largest island, Mahé. The third example is isolated inselberg vegetation, which opens the discussion as to whether those remnants of native vegetation that are apparently relatively resistant to ongoing environmental change should be 'artificially' enriched with rare native species.Read More
