Abstract: The boundary layer approximation is based on the assumption of constant pressure gradient along the normal direction to the surface, neglecting stream-wise diffusion terms and the retaining only dominant viscous terms. In this chapter the general concepts of boundary layer including nature of boundary layer flow, boundary layer regime, transition from laminar to turbulent boundary layer flow and separation are explained firstly. And then the definitions and mathematical expressions of skin friction coefficient and boundary layer displacement, momentum and energy thicknesses are given. For approximate prediction of above-mentioned different boundary layer parameters a table of formulas of the flow over a flat plate is also attached.
