Title: Preliminary results of the Spacelab-2 infrared telescope survey of the galactic plane at 2.4μm
Abstract: We present preliminary 2.4μm maps of the galactic center region and the galactic plane between l=−10° and 110° obtained with the Infrared Telescope (IRT) flown aboard the Space Shuttle in 1985. These results are in qualitative agreement with earlier balloon‐borne observations which showed the overall 2.4μm emission to be more widely distributed perpendicular to the plane than is seen in the longer wavelength IRAS survey. We measure the FWHM of the surface brightness perpendicular to the plane to be ∼5° for 15°≤l≤60° and somewhat wider inward of 15° owing to the presence of an extended bulge. The intensity of the surface brightness along the plane shows a steady increase toward the galactic center for l<70°, with a sharp increase seen within ±2° of the galactic center. The structure within the brightness distribution along the plane is tentatively associated with various spiral arms and H II regions.
