Abstract: Abstract Dance is an area of the humanities that has not received as much attention as have other areas. There are several reasons for this void, including lack of historical documentation, and a shortage of reference sources and publications. Progress has been made in the past few years and this article will discuss collection development issues related to dance, including: liaison with collection users, evaluation and understanding of the collection, development and upkeep of a collection, collection development policy, knowledge of vendors and publishers, astute use of selection tools and reviews, reading the serial literature, intelligent selections of video formats and equipment, and relationships with professional organizations. The suggested practices will assist the dance bibliographer in building a broadly based and academically responsive collection.
