Abstract: The thrust of this paper is to examine discipline as an important component of any educational system. Some people however perceive discipline as external to curriculum such that discipline in the school system is sought outside the school system. For instance, in Nigeria, soldiers were deployed to schools in an attempt to maintain an effective school discipline. Corporal punishment is a regular feature of school discipline which of course is a form of child abuse. Corporal punishment persists in the Nigerian school system because some teachers misunderstand the difference between punishment and discipline. Punishment is a form of pain inflicted on an individual to stop him/her from misbehaving while discipline is an act of teaching a child to learn correct behaviour without the fear of violence. The paper therefore discussed the concept of discipline, the need for discipline in creating a positive and supportive learning environment, effective techniques for classroom discipline and the implications of maintaining discipline in teaching and learning in the Nigerian classroom setting.
