Anxiety has been conceptualized in diff...The importance of anxiety in the health of women and their children means that the issue of how to measure anxiety during pregnancy and after birth is critical. Anxiety has been conceptualized in different ways in perinatal research, including pregnancy-specific anxiety, anxiety symptoms, as well as the full range of anxiety disorders. In this chapter, we look at why it is important to identify perinatal anxiety and whether diagnostic criteria are relevant to women during this time. We then consider general issues and provisos we need to be aware of when measuring and screening for perinatal anxiety. In the final section, we briefly outline different measures of anxiety disorders, symptoms, and pregnancy-specific anxiety. However, choice of measure is highly dependent on the purpose and context in which it is to be used. More research is needed to validate measures for use with perinatal women and provide normative data. Measurement of anxiety in men during this time is also important and needs to be addressed.Read More
