Abstract: Abstract Since South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, the country's health care system has gone through several distinct periods in terms of restructuring. Between 1994 and 2004 the health care system underwent a period of post‐apartheid reconstruction. This was followed by a period between 1999 and 2004 that was characterized by a period of changing disease profiles. The period from 2004 to date has seen an expansion of primary health care services, and today, in 2013, significant health care reforms are underway.
