Abstract: The bending moment in the cantilever slabs due to live loads is usually determined on the assumption that the slab is fixed along its junction with the web in bridge design. The paper considers the assumption that full fixity leads to moments which are higher by up to 50% than the moments obtained when the slab is analyzed together with the webs and the top and bottom slabs, if any, of the bridge cross section. Also discussed are design charts that were developed to allow rapid and accurate determination of the maximum moment and the distribution of the moment along the supporting web for different geometric and restraint conditions; an example is provided to illustrate the proposed method.
