Title: THE PROSPECT AND GOWANUS EXPRESSWAY CORRIDORS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT (TSM) PROJECT
Abstract: The Prospect and Gowanus Expressway Interchange project is a major milestone for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). With its design consultant, NYSDOT developed innovative transportation systems management (TSM) strategies and used cutting-edge technology to successfully manage corridor traffic during reconstruction of one of the country's busiest highway facilities. TSM measures included intelligent transportation systems (ITS) along both expressways, a contra-flow bus/high occupancy vehicle (HOV) 2+ lane on the Gowanus Expressway, on-site incident removal (tow trucks and police), and real-time information to motorists via variable message signs. The extensive ITS technologies deployed for construction included extensive detection capabilities and combined functionalities of advanced traveler information systems, advanced traffic management systems, and a bus/HOV lane.
