Abstract: De ontwikkeling van scenario's met een expliciete
tijdsafhankelijkheid is cruciaal voor een goede inschatting van de
moegelijke gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Daarnaast vereist een adequate
behandeling van terugkoppelingen een geografisch expliciete beschrijving van
de interactie tussen klimaat en biosfeer. Met de huidige versie van IMAGE 2
(Integrated Model to Assess the Greenhouse Effect) is dit maar beperkt
mogelijk. De dynamiek op tijdschalen korter dan op de decennium schaal
wordt niet adequaat beschreven. Een belangrijk deel van de tekortkomingen
van IMAGE in dit opzicht bevindt zich in het huidige gebruikte klimaatmodel. Dit eenvoudige model is niet in staat om mondiaal een 3-dimensionaal klimaat
dynamisch te simuleren en zal daarom moeten worden vervangen. Dit rapport
beschrijft in het kort de relevante aspecten van IMAGE 2 en het nieuwe
klimaat model ECBILT. ECBILT is speciaal ontwikkeld voor onderzoek naar
klimaatvariabiliteit en -voorspelbaarheid en is relatief weinig
reken-intensief, maar bevat wel alle relevante fysica en dynamica voor een
adequate beschrijving van 3-dimensionale klimaatvariabiliteit en
-patronen.Het is dus een ideaal gereedschap om interacties en
terugkoppelingen te onderzoeken in het klimaatsysteem zelf en in het
gekoppelde Samenleving-Klimaat-Biosfeer systeem, zoals dat in IMAGE 2 wordt
beschreven. Dit is een van de onderzoeksdoelstellingen van het IMAGE-2
project. De taken die voortvloeien uit het integreren van ECBILT in IMAGE 2
zullen besproken worden. Speciale aandacht zal besteed worden aan de
herziening van de biochemie van de oceaan, de afhankelijkheid van
kortgolvige stralingsbalans van sulfaat aerosolen, de grenslaag dynamica en
de interacties tussen de atmosfeer en het landoppervlak, het onderling
consistent maken van de hydrologische cyclus in de verschillende
(toekomstige) delen van IMAGE 2 en het herzien van de berekeningen van
verwachte zeespiegelstijging. IMAGE 2 berekent veranderingen in emissies en
atmosferische samenstelling. De eerste link tussen IMAGE 2 en ECBILT is een
stralingsschema dat langgolvige stralingsfluxen bepaalt en de effecten van
veranderingen in atmosferische samenstelling op de stralingsbalans
simuleert. De berekende stralingsforcering wordt door ECBILT gebruikt als
een van de randvoorwaarden van de dynamische simulatie van
klimaatverandering. In dit rapport wordt de nieuwe stralingsmodule
beschreven, gevalideerd en getest. Het doel van het model is om langgolvige
stralingsfluxen te berekenen op de verticale modelniveau's van ECBILT. Hierbij wordt uitgegaan van gegevens over atmosferische en aardoppervlak
temperatuur, vochtigheidsgraad, bewolkingsgraad en concentraties van ozon en
de mondiaal goed gemengde broeikasgassen. Een geavanceerd stralingsmodel,
zoals bijvoorbeeld wordt gebruikt in de meest geavanceerde General
Circulation Models (GCMs, mondiale klimaat modellen), is te reken-intensief
voor onze toepassingen. De gekozen oplossing is linearisatie van een
dergelijk stralingsmodel rond atmosferische referentie profielen. Afwijkingen t.o.v. deze referentie profielen beinvloeden de fluxen via
gevoeligheidscoefficienten voor elke variabele (temperatuur, etc.). De
waarden van deze coefficienten zijn bepaald in het linearisatie-proces. Het
gelineariseerde stralingsschema geeft goede resultaten wanneer het
vergeleken wordt met het originele model en met waarnemingen, zeker gezien
de lage verticale resolutie van de variabelen in ECBILT. Een versie van het
gelineariseerde model waarin drie wolktypen gebruikt worden geeft
aanmerkelijk betere resultaten dan een vrsie waarin slechts een gemiddeld
wolktype wordt gebruikt. In het gelineariseerde model beinvloeden
variabelen de stralingsfluxen onafhankelijk van elkaar. Dit is een nadeel
dat eigen is aan een lineaire benadering. Absorptiebandoverlap effecten van
bijvoorbeeld methaan en lachgas worden niet meegenomen in deze versie van
het gelineariseerde model. Dergelijke effecten worden beter beschreven door
een meer procesmatig model. Bovendien kan van een lineair model verwacht
worden dat het minder goede resultaten levert wanneer het toegepast wordt op
een klimaattoestend die sterk afwijkt van die van het referentie klimaat. De eerste tests, waarin het nieuwe stralingsschema is ingebouwd in ECBILT,
tonen echter aan dat het ook naar tevredenheid functioneert in een
afwijkend, maar realistisch gezien mogelijk klimaat. Dit vergroot ons
vertrouwen in het model als de eerste en belangrijke link tussen IMAGE 2 en
ECBILT.
