Three such engines are clustered in the aft end of the orbiter stage. They burn in parallel with the solid-propellant boosters during the initial ascent phase and continue to burn after booster ejection until just prior to orbit insertion. The nominal burn time is roughly 10 min. Propulsion requirements demand maximum performance from liquid oxygen/hydrogen propellants with a minimum hardware weight. The engine design and the present progress made in the development of the engine are discussed.Read More
