Title: FUEL CELLS – DIRECT ALCOHOL FUEL CELLS | Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells
Abstract: In this article, the working principle of a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) and its thermodynamic/kinetic considerations are introduced. Then, the progress in DEFCs in terms of both materials and components is reviewed. These include the electrocatalysts (PtRu- and PtSn-based catalysts) for anode ethanol electrooxidation reaction, Pt-based/non-Pt catalysts for cathode oxygen reduction reaction, and membranes for DEFCs. The technical designs of membrane–electrode assemblies tailored to ethanol fuel cells are also included. The state-of-the-art DEFC performances are also summarized and compared. Finally, the development challenges met in DEFCs, including both the fundamental and the technical issues, are also discussed.
