Title: SAFETY EVALUATION FOR BEARING CAPACITY OF PILES IN LOAD AND RESISTANCE FACTOR DESIGN CRITERIA
Abstract: In this paper, the safety of the bearing capacity of driven and embedded piles is evaluated by means of the load and resistance factor design (lrfd) based on actual load test data collected by the public works research institute (pwri). The pile bearing capacity predicted by any given bearing capacity formula or load test is theoretically derived as the probabilistic model which takes into consideration various kinds of random variables such as modeling, soil property, construction, measurement and estimation errors. Meyerhof's formula, Japanese specifications formula, load test and other formulae are used here to compute nominal resistance for both driven and embedded piles, and lrfd criteria are then obtained for each type of pile. Utilizing the load factors proposed by the lrfd committee in the United States, recommendable safety factors are proposed for each design formula. (TRRL)
