Abstract: The present chapter provides an overview of the past accomplishments and future directions in the field of culture and social cognition. Research in the previous decade has identified (1) several mechanisms that mediate the social cognitive effects of culture (internalized cultural contents, intersubjective representations, implicit and embodied cognitions), and (2) some moderators of cultural influence (applicability of cultural construct, motivation to align with cultural norms, need for epistemic and existential security). These results have deepened our understanding of the multiple ways through which culture influences social cognition and have illuminated how people create and apply cultural traditions to meet their psychological needs and adapt to the changing physical and social ecology. The authors also discuss several new and future research directions, which include systematic investigations into other forms of culture, the cognitive consequences of multicultural experiences, management of multiple cultural identities, evolution of culture, and cultural neuroscience.
