Title: Voices of the Civil Rights Division: Then and Now
Abstract: In October 2011 veterans of Civil Rights Division of 1960's spoke at a conference about work of Division. Their words provide a sense of place, a sense of historical context, a sense of racial caste system, and a sense of role of Department of Justice in enforcing civil rights laws. This symposium piece introduces short comments by Gerald Stern, James P. Turner, John Rosenberg and Chad Quaintance, who spoke about enforcing civil rights laws in Alabama in 1960's. The excerpts from symposium end with a remarkable conversation between Yale Law Professor Owen Fiss and former Assistant Attorney General John Doar, who was, as President Obama recently noted the face of Justice Department in South.
