Title: Review of Futures Markets and Futures Trading
Abstract: This chapter presents an introduction to the background necessary for understanding the basics of futures markets, futures trading, and the managed futures industry. Due to ease of trade and relatively high level of liquidity, trend following systems trade in futures markets and interbank forward markets worldwide. As a result, an understanding of the key characteristics of forwards and futures contracts and futures markets is essential. Managed futures, commonly associated with commodity trading advisors (CTAs) is a subclass of alternative investment strategies, which take positions and trade primarily in futures markets, forward markets, options and other liquid derivatives and structured products. There are many types of managed futures strategies; the most common type and the focus of this book is systematic trend following. Futurization can lead to even further increases in volumes of futures contracts and a blurring of the lines between over-the-counter (OTC) and exchange traded (ETD) contracts going forward.
