Title: Not all dreams are deceptive : an economic analysis of the market potential of rail freight
Abstract: The European Commission argues that greater efforts are required to decouple transport growth from economic growth or to achieve a different model distribution. Freight carriage in Europe has grown dramatically in recent decades. The factors explaining the growing dominance of road haulage over rail haulage are examined. Shaping an appropriate transport policy requires insight into future traffic per mode and per region of origin and destiny. A comparison is made of forecasts with the transport totals realised in freight traffic. Growth forecasts for freight transport by rail are considered. The need for a growth strategy for rail traffic in Europe is discussed. Factors that may improve the competitiveness of rail transport are considered. These include the pricing mechanism, institutional developments and management-related initiatives.
