Abstract: This article mainly concerns the mind–body problem. The problem – how the mind and the body are related – is described. The mind is special because it is intentional, conscious, and rational. Bodies or physical objects are not characterized by these properties. I go on to discuss various solutions to the problem – dualism, epiphenomenalism, idealism, physicalism, eliminative materialism. I then discuss Chomsky's idea that there is no mind–body problem and McGinn's claim that we can never solve it. Finally, I present the idea that what is represented is all there is to what it's like (representationalism), the idea that the mind is a computer, and an approach to showing how physical phenomena could represent by carrying information (Dretske; Millikan).
