Abstract: An attempt is made to integrate and interpret various polar and magnetospheric substorm phenomena as consequences of the acceleration process of auroral particles which could result from the diversion of a part of the magnetotail current to the night side of the auroral oval. Thus, this paper is not intended to be a literature survey, but to present a way along which magnetospheric substorms might be studied in the future.
