Abstract: In The Absent City , intertextuality and metafiction link the poetic with the political from the stories of the narrating machine, which is opposed to the distorted reality of the Establishment’s narratives. The novel establishes a dialog with other texts in order to reflect on the literary tradition and think about the resistance of literature from the references to other authors who suggest other ways to read and point out the monological discourse of authoritarian governments. This article takes up some lines of research on intertextuality and metafiction, and aims to show how some allusions suggest a poetic of the fantastic that provides connections between Kafka and Joyce, Macedonio and Onetti.
