Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of the cultural and religious origins of charity in Middle East and North Africa (MFNA) region, and a sense of the region's growing recognition of its own ability to realize the potential of philanthropy for not only MENA, but the world. The philanthropic sector has a historic opportunity to encourage movement away from greed and self-appropriation toward a world governed by the objectives of long-term value creation and sustainability. Crucially, the growth of the philanthropic sector in the MENA region also depends very much on how governments act. Philanthropy in the MENA region, despite facing a complex set of external and internal challenges, is bound to grow both in its maturity and effectiveness. Further, in a region where philanthropy is predominantly faith inspired, the resolution of long-standing religious and geopolitical conflicts is critical to the peace and prosperity of the region and its neighboring lands. Controlled Vocabulary Terms corporate giving; Middle East and North Africa; philanthropy
