Abstract: This chapter explores various components to employee (and especially executive) compensation in relation to incentives and human performance interventions. The discussion of these performance interventions focuses on how performance measures are linked to pay-performance structures in various sets of incentive plans. The chapter provides a brief description of compensation packages that include base salaries, bonuses, stock options, and deferred compensation plans. It outlines various existing perspectives on compensation and performance management. The chapter presents ideas on how performance measures can be specified at two levels of aggregation: specific performance measures and aggregate performance measures. Using this taxonomy, the chapter examines the application of various incentive schemes. Strengths and criticisms of these schemes are then considered, followed by a recommended design and implementation process. The chapter concludes with an overview of the major areas of concern. Controlled Vocabulary Terms Employee compensation applications; executive compensation; Incentives; Performance measurement
