Title: 23-P-31 - Butylation of phenol on medium pore AIPO4-t-11, −31 and −41 structures: effect of silicon incorporation
Abstract: This chapter presents the butylation of phenol with tert-butylalcohol (TBA) on medium pore aluminophosphates AlPO4–11, –31, and –41. Their activity is compared with their silicon-substituted versions SAPO–11, –31, and –41. AlPO4 frameworks without silicon substitution are found to be active. Terminal hydroxyls in AlPO4s are active for the butylation of phenol. A temperature as moderate as 140°C, is sufficient for considerable butylation of phenol. However, selectivities of the industrially important 4-tertiary butyl phenol (4-TBP) and 2,4 di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) are enhanced at higher temperatures. An equimolar feed concentration of phenol and TBA is optimum to yield 4-TBP and 2,4-DTBP selectively and also a lower space velocity of about 1hr -1 favors this reaction.
