Title: TOURIST TRAFFIC ON FEDERAL GERMAN MAIN ROADS. STUDIES OF A METHOD OF FORECASTING TOTAL NUMBERS OF VEHICLES
Abstract: IT IS NO LONGER SUFFICIENT TO BASE LONG TERM FORECASTS OF TRAFFIC ON THEORETICAL INCREASES IN VEHICLES AND ROAD CAPACITY; THE BEHAVIOUR OF MAN AND ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENTS HAVE TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. THIS IS PARTICULARLY TRUE FOR DETERMINING THE TOTAL LOADING OF THE ROAD NETWORK BY TOURIST TRAFFIC; FORECASTS OF THIS MUST CONSIDER NUMBER OF JOURNEYS MADE, CHOICE OF TRANSPORT MODE, POPULATION, AND JOURNEY FREQUENCY. BY 1990 IT IS EXPECTED THAT DURING THE MONTHS OF JULY AND AUGUST TOURIST TRAFFIC WILL AMOUNT TO ABOUT 45 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL VEHICLES ON THE ROADS. RESULTS OF STUDIES OF JOURNEYS MADE BY THE GERMAN PEOPLE AND FOREIGN TOURISTS ARE EVALUATED, AND, BASED ON THESE RESULTS, THE STAGGERING OF HOLIDAYS IS RECOMMENDED, TOGETHER WITH THE PERIODIC CHECKING OF PLANNING PRINCIPLES AGAINST DEVELOPMENTS ACTUALLY TAKING PLACE.
