Title: 'Half the time I go to work feeling like I've already worked a full day: 'time' and women's unpaid work'
Abstract: This paper compares three groups of married women unhappy with the way their time is spent. All women felt overwhelmed by their unpaid work. Even the women in full-time work did not always delegate domestic work at home. It was found that the involvement of women in voluntary work is a time-consuming moral obligation, felt especially by women not in full-time paid work. Any assumption of domestic work by other family members was usually the result of the overworked woman pushing for change. The social construction of femininity within a moral discourse of obligation, caring and selfsacrifice remains robust, even where women are experiencing a serious shortage of time in their lives.
