Title: Transforming students into scholars: The DU LIS Student Publishing Group
Abstract: One of the goals of the University of Denver LIS program is to “train students to be reflective practitioners and critical consumers of information.” Publishing as a student is one way to synthesize the knowledge garnered in the classroom and to promote oneself professionally to the larger LIS community.
The LIS Student Publishing Group aims to:
• Create an opportunity for students to network with other students with similar research interests,
• Provide resources to help students navigate the world of publishing/conference presentation, and
• Critically assess each other’s work with the aim of improving products for publication.
The group meets once a month, employing a “salon/book club” atmosphere. One student pre-submits a draft of scholarship for review by the group. At the meeting, the research is critiqued with an eye to preparing it for publication submission. A faculty member with applicable expertise is invited to advance the discussion.
Additionally, the group utilizes a content management system (Plone) to compile resources for would-be publishers and facilitate group communication.
This model could be adopted by groups of librarians who would benefit from the collegial support of others to further individual publication efforts (i.e. a group of academic librarians, public librarians from across a district).
