Abstract: As a result of the boring continuing debate between monetarists and fiscalists it would appear that an evaluation of recent monetary policy should focus on three issues: Can the Federal Reserve control the money supply? Would appropriate control of the money supply lead to desired levels or rates of change of economically meaningful target variables? Should the money supply be controlled even if such control does lead to the achievement of targets?
