In Brazil, only a few studies discuss identification of Brucella spp. species and biotypes, which is necessary for the development of brucellosis control and eradication programs. Therefore, this study assesses B. abortus strains isolated from 137 animals in Minas Gerais, Para, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Sao Paulo, and Tocantins from 1977 to 2008. B. abortus biovars 1, 2 and 3 were observed and biovars 4 and 6 were identified. All B. abortus biovar 3 strains were classified as sub-group 3b by AMOS-ERY PCR. A further enhanced procedure revealed three biovar 3 positive samples in Para, which may be considered an epidemiological marker for isolates from that region.Read More
