Abstract: The design and optimization of microscale heat exchangers requires us to understand the flow dynamics and heat transfer processes in very small channels. This chapter provides a short summary of scalar transport processes in conventional laminar and turbulent wall flows. Macroeffects have been confused with microeffects in some studies, at least in some pioneering investigations. The chapter discusses this particular point in detail. A special section is devoted to gas microflows. The chapter also discusses some specific scale effects in liquid flows in microchannels. Controlled Vocabulary Terms heat exchangers; heat transfer; laminar flow; microchannel flow; turbulence
