Abstract: Childhood illnesses related to malnutrition and infectious diseases still represent a significant burden, but with improved health technologies, medicines, and delivery systems, the picture has changed. Acceptance of the diagnosis and treatment of an illness can be difficult, often being undermined by uncertainty regarding the course of the illness, rumination, pain, and sleep disturbances. However, proper therapy can influence other characteristics associated with resilience, such as appropriate cognitive appraisals, effective coping methods, acknowledging and expressing emotions, spirituality, engaging in self-management whenever possible, and even making every effort to focus on potential positive outcomes of their illness. The hardships of the caregiving role vary with the nature of the patient's illness, and the relationship between the caregiver and the recipient. The loss of a child is always horrendous, irrespective of its cause. However, each situation can engender different consequences for survivors.
