Abstract: The feed requirements of beef cattle, in terms of metabolizable energy (ME) have been reviewed with particular reference to animals weighing up to 400 kg. Results from grazing experiments in New Zealand, while agreeing in general with the utilization of ME fed above maintenance as laid down in feeding standards, indicate that the total feed requirements are considerably in excess of these standards. Most cattle feeding experiments carried out in New Zealand have not led to any marked advance in defining feed requirements of grazing beef cattle.
