Abstract: The division of labor separates the product as such from each individual contributor. Standing by itself, as an independent object, it is suitable to subordinate itself into an order of phenomena, or to serve an individual's purposes. Thereby, however, it loses that inner animation which can only be given to the total work by a complete human being, which carries its usefulness into the spiritual center of other individuals. A work of art is such an immeasurable cultural value precisely because it is inaccessible to any division of labor, because the created product preserves the creator to the innermost degree.Georg Simmel, The Conflict in Modern Culture and Other Essays (1968): 45–6
